History and philosophy

AutoCAD was originally developed by Larry Osborne, Jack Sinclair, and Bob Tiede. Osborne, Sinclair and Tiede were all former members of the Acorn Electron team, which was a team of programmers at Acorn Computers Limited. The name Autodesk came from a former Acorn employee named Derek Atkins, and a former Acorn employee named Steve Grove. Atkins was the manager of the software department and Grove was a software developer. Osborne, Sinclair and Tiede were brought on board to program the software. The original name for the software was ACAD. The name was changed to AutoCAD.

The first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. Osborne, Sinclair and Tiede had an idea that there was no real need for a full featured CAD program. With CAD programs that were available at the time there were many restrictions, including that users could not save files until the program was completely closed. There were also many tools in CAD applications at the time, including floating windows, which could also be a source of frustration.

Osborne, Sinclair and Tiede wanted a software application that was simple to use. The new application would be for both design and drafting professionals. Therefore, Osborne, Sinclair and Tiede’s philosophy was to have the application be simple enough to be used by individuals and families at home for designing furniture, parts and objects, as well as other products.

The company’s business model was centered on the strength of its software, customer service, and its small number of programmers compared to its competitors. Autodesk had two employees who worked full-time on developing AutoCAD. In 1989, this was fewer than one percent of the total number of people who worked for the company. Compatibility to early Mac and Windows releases of AutoCAD is defined in the Open Architecture and the Open Architecture Programmer’s Manual (the Open Architecture).

AutoCAD 2000 was only compatible with AutoCAD up to Release 11.

In AutoCAD 2015, all new objects and functions were made compatible to all previous releases of AutoCAD.

Most of the currently available software products are only compatible with AutoCAD up to Release 2014.
